Better Check Your References Before the Employer Does
Better Check Your References Before the Employer DoesThere has long been a debate regarding references and whether or not to include them in a resume. Many applicants are uncomfortable providing the information up front, preferring instead to simply state that references are available upon request. This is an outdated method and I always encourage clients NOT to write that on their resume, rather bring them with you to the interview. Whichever route you choose, it is critical you be aware of what information you are providing to qualifikation employers as well as their ability to check that information. In other words, check your references because you never know who does.References typically fall into two categories personal and professional. Professional references are preferable as they give a potential employer the ability to confirm our work history. Personal references work well for those with little work history. The important thing to remember is that both types of references can be checked. When offering references, be sure to carefully follow these three guidelines.1. Provide complete contact information When providing a reference, be sure to provide complete contact information. This includes full names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses (when possible). Also include employment dates, job titles and supervisor names. Failure to provide complete information gives the appearance of attempting to avoid the references being reference information for people who do not know they are being included in a reference list. It not only puts them on the spot but failure to call and receive approval can mean providing schwimmbad contact information or worsea bad reference.2. Know what they are going to say When asking permission to include a former supervisor or co-worker on your reference list, take the opportunity to ask what they will say. While this may seem awkward, ensuring a positive review or reference is the best way to control this portion of the application process.3. Lastly, some states or companies place restrictions on what information a former employer can provide. In many cases, they are allowed to only confirm employment dates and salary history. It is always a better idea to use a reference that can provide applicable information about your work history and ethics. Be sure to confirm that your references can provide additional information to potential employers. Some say that not everyone checks references, but I think today with such easy access via internet and reference checking companies, most do. The point is, you dont know. Because of this, it is critical that all reference information be accurate and positive.References can be an excellent way to personalize your work history. Carefully select the people you would like to use as references and confirm with them what they will say so you are aware of the information that potential employers receive. By properly preparin g them, being honest in your answers and the information you present, you have a much better chance of presenting the best possible face to potential employers.Guest Post by Erin Kennedy, CPRW, CERW, BS/HR, is a Certified Professional Executive Resume Writer/Career Consultant and President of Professional Resume Services, Inc. Men Avoiding Women At Work After Surge Of Sexual Harassment
Men Avoiding Women At Work After Surge Of Sexual Harassment An unsettling surge of sexual harassment scandals had shaken up big business in 2016 following high-profile cases at Fox News and Uber, in venture capital and across military academies and, as well as accusations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, workplaces are rightfully tensing up. And with the MeToo movement on social media, sexual harassment is a hot topic, indeed. The Society for Human Resource Management has witnessed a spike in questions pertaining to sexual harassment from its members and, as a society, were having mora of the critical conversations for which weve been advocating, which is something to celebrate.Right? Can MeToo Actually Hurt Women More?Certainly, heightened awareness surrounding workplace harassment is a step forward and will, in many ways, improve behavior as employees become cognizant of the consequences and thus conduct themselves with sensitivity. But, that said, some men are evading engagem ent with women altogether, such as individual meetings with female entrepreneurs, potential recruits and women who ask for informational or networking meetings. In total, 64 percent of senior men and 50 percent of junior women avoid solo interactions, according to the Center for Talent Innovation. A May poll by Morning Consultalso found that nearly two-thirds of men and women agree that people should take extra caution around the opposite sex in the workplace, and about a quarter think that private work-related meetings with colleagues of the opposite sex are inappropriate. Simply said Theyre concerned that a single misunderstood comment, any one accusation, the risk of rumors or unclear motives could jeopardize their careers. But their avoidance is setting women back in the workplace even mora. The Importance of Advocates and Sponsors in the WorkplaceOf course, hard work reigns supreme, but its no secret that having advocates plays a significant role in ones success who you know can never hurt. And research shows that establishing genuine rapport with senior staff is perhaps the most important contributor to career advancement. Those respected relationships are referred to as sponsorships, wherein sponsors facilitate potential opportunities for certain employees and actually push for them.According to a study by the Center for Work-Life Policy, women with sponsors are indeed more likely to earn challenging assignments and raises and to say they are satisfied with their career progress. A sponsor may also provide valuable candid feedback, which women are less likely to receive than men, according to research by the nonprofit Lean In.But, at every level, more men than women say they interact with senior leaders at least once a week, and a gamut of more research suggests that this imbalance does, in fact, encumber womens progression into higher-level positions.Sylvia Ann Hewlett, founder and chief executive of the Center for Talent Innovation, which studied sponsor ship, told The New York Timesthat sponsors have to spend some capital and take a risk on up-and-coming people, which they wouldnt be inclined to do without knowing and trusting them. These sponsorships are therefore crucial for getting from the middle to the top.Of course, the lack of sponsorships for women is only exacerbated by the sheer fact that men still make up the majority of leadership roles, from Silicon Valley to STEM and the bulk of industries in between. The age-old Catch-22 Women could use more sponsorships to move up and, in order for women to have more sponsorships, we need more women to have moved up.--AnnaMarie Houlis is a multimedia journalist and an adventure aficionado with a keen cultural curiosity and an affinity for solo travel. Find out What to Wear to a Job Interview at StarbucksFind out What to Wear to a Job Interview at StarbucksIf youre interviewing at Starbucks, you should wear an outfit that has a relaxed, business casual look. Starbucks is known for its friendly and relaxed atmosphere and you should copy that atmosphere in your appearance. You do elend need to wear a formal, professional outfit. Instead of a suit and tie, or a dress and heels, think khakis and a button-down. Attire for All Interview Levels You should tailor your level of formality to the position for which youre applying. Starbucks has a variety of retail positions available ranging from baristas to district managers. You should tailor your attire accordingly. For example, a woman applying to be a barista might wear colored slacks and a simple blouse, but a nice skirt and a heel if she were applying to be a manager. Because Starbucks is in the foodtafelgeschirr industry, you should prioritize cleanliness and make sure you appear well-kept. For example, long hair should be tied back, nails should be trimmed, and clothes should be wrinkle-free and without any stains. Its important to look presentable, even if youre not applying for a professional office position. When to Dress it Up However, if youre aiming for a manager position, you might want to dress up a little more, perhaps adding a tie if youre a man, or wearing a pencil skirt and more formal blouse if youre a woman. Joe Girardi From Engineer to Yankees Manager
Joe Girardi From Engineer to Yankees Manager Joe Girardi From Engineer to Yankees Manager Alfred Hitchcock. Charles Lindbergh. Bill Nye the Science Guy. Each started out to become a mechanical engineer but ended up making his true mark in a different field.Add New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi to this list of celebrity ex-engineers.Baseball fans have long idolized Girardi for his 15 remarkable seasons as an All-Star catcher with the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals, and Yankees. After his playing days, he got involved in sports broadcasting and briefly managed the Florida Marlins before taking on one of the most challenging assignments in major league baseballfollowing in the footsteps of legendary Yankees manager Joe Torre. But before all that, Girardi was an aspiring industrial engineering student at Northwestern Universitys McCormick School of Engineering and Management, balancing a heavy academic load with a budding career on the diamond. In 2007, the school r ecognized him with its distinguished alumni award. In his award address, he explained how his academic background has contributed to his career success in baseball. You think about industrial engineers as problem solvers. In baseball, thats what you do. Situations come up all the time where you use the skills youve learned to solve problems. You figure out how to make systems run better and be more efficient, and really thats what yure trying to do as a manager, he told interviewers. As a catcher, he had to calculate a pitchers strength and a batters weakness in order to succeed. They give you so many statistics in baseball today that some players become paralyzed, but I loved it, he said.Problem-Solving in BaseballFans and critics alike recognize Girardis knack for applying engineering-like principles of statistics and problem-solving to the execution of a ball game. Following some controversial decisions in the 2009 playoffs, the online magazine Slate dubbed him too smart for his ow n good. But thats not quite how Girardi sees it. I love numbers, he told the Harvard Business Review. You can never give me too many numbers. I believe they tell a story, if you have a large enough sample. However, he cautioned, If you think too much, you fail, because the game happens too quickly. The key is preparation. You tell the player, Heres the informationnow go play. The data has to become instinctual. You cant think about it in the middle of a pitch.Information-Driven StyleAt Northwestern, Girardi honed his numerical talents under statistics professor Ajit Tamhane. Joe has had a fantastic career, Tamhane says today. He exemplifies our talented alumni body, many of whom have gone on to pursue diverse career paths and achieved great success in their fields. But did they really leave engineering behind?Hitchcocks career was distinguished by technical genius. Lindberghs determination and problem-solving skills carried him solo across the Atlantic. Nyes communication skills help p eople of all ages understand complex science and engineering concepts. Girardis information-driven style helps reduce the power of serendipity over the outcome of a game. Each in his own way has advanced his profession while enriching countless lives. And isnt that what engineering is all about?Michael MacRae is an independent writer. You think about industrial engineers as problem solvers. In baseball, thats what you do. Situations come up all the time where you use the skills youve learned to solve problems.Joe Girardi, manager, New York Yankees
